Starbucks, Tan Lines and California Sunshine |
![]() This is a tale of a Texas girl trying to get acclimated to the Californian lifestyle. So far it's been full of Starbucks, Tan Lines and California Sunshine. |
Almost every year since Ryan and I started dating, we would go the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, TX (between Austin and Houston; about 2-2 1/2 hours away) and we absolutely LOVED it. This place was built specifically to host this awesome event. All 8 weeks of it. Every weekend has a different theme. The first renfest we went to had the 1001 Dreams weekend. There were scantily clad women walking around in lingerie and wings thinking they were Victoria’s Secret runway models. Uh, no. There is so much to do and so many fun shows. The one that Ryan and I both really liked and went to every time we were there was the act called “Sound and Fury.” They are Fakespearian Players. Very raunchy and they constantly break that fourth wall. You will leave in tears(of laughter) and go back for the next show on the same day. There was a jousting tournament and fireworks at the end of the evening.
We went to the Escondido RenFest since we now live in California. It was not as amazing as the Tex RenFest. It was at a park. There was playground in the middle of it. We did however get to participate in 2 shows. The first show of the day that we saw was “A Fool and his Family” and they did a spin on Hansel and Gretel. Ryan got to be both the evil stepmother and the evil witch;hats provided. The next show was the “Knotty Stitcher”. She had these codpiece things that she had first 3 guy volunteers wear and then 4 female volunteers wear covering their private area. She was a bit raunchy but then again, what is any renfest without a few raunchy acts? They were also serving Chinese food there. Weird and totally out of place.
Of the two, Ryan and I agreed that the Texas RenFest is the better of the two. Next weekend we are headed to Irwindale, CA to go to The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Looking at their website, it’s going to be almost like the Texas one. We’re really excited. At least at this one I’ll get my frozen margaritas. At the Escondido one, there was a roped off place where you had to sit and drink. All they served was beer.
Best rendition of “Telephone” by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce. Loves it.

Here in California, In-N-Out is their Sonic. They serve fries, burgers and milkshakes. No happy meals, no salads, no substitution. You can get a single burger, a double double or a triple triple. Onions come regular or you can get them “animal style” (grilled). I’ve eaten there twice so far. The fries are my favorite things. They are actually potatoes that are cut and fried, not that stuff that’s frozen then poured out of a bag like at McDonalds. The burgers are okay. You can barely taste the “animal style” onions. The milkshakes are okay too. They only come on chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.
I miss Sonic and Chik-fil-A!
I googled Sonic to find one in California. Yes, they do have one. It is in Santee and it is a 30 minute drive from us. And yes, we went there once. I got the tea since it is the most super delicious thing ever. I googled Chik-fil-A. Yes, there are a few. One of them is near LA. We were not going to drive 2 hours to get our Chik-fil-A fix. To my surprise, while driving around San Diego looking at different hotels where my parents could stay at (side note: I know you can look for hotels online but I want to make sure my parents have stuff to walk to while they’re here. The roads are 6 lanes and you have to cross at the cross walk unless you have a death wish.) and down one of the so called “shady” streets that one of the hotels I had been looking at online, had a Chik-fil-A hidden. It’s actually in front of the San Diego Sport Arena, yeah the one where the Globe Trotters performed at. Ryan and I always drive by a Dairy Queen when we go to Disneyland. I love their blizzards and chicken tenders and their gravy.
Is it worth driving to Santee for a Sonic Raspberry Sweet Tea? Maybe. But since Chik-fil-A is closer, I’d rather get my waffle fries fix.
When I visited family in the Philippines, they took me to a place called Jollibee. I fell in love with it. There’s one near us and we go almost once a week. Perhaps for now this is my new favorite place. I go there for the Filipino spaghetti. It’s super awesome.
So out of all the things listed, In-N-Out does not belong because it has not proven itself to be more super delicious than Chik-fil-A, Sonic or Dairy Queen.
I am Robsessed. This takes the cake. Haha. Love Jimmy Fallon.
